About Billy Russell and Charlene Horton Russell, both class of 50!

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 20:47, on Sunday, January 28, 2007

Charlyne Horton Russell, class of 1950, has had a series of operations in the past 1 1/2 years. She had orthoscopic surgery to remove torn cartilage in her left knee in March, 2005. The same surgery was performed on her right knee on Sept. 19, 2006. In addition she had a lumbar laminectomy on her lower back on Dec. 7, 2006. These three operations were the results of a fall down the last 3 steps in her home bringing an armload of Christmas decorations downstairs in Dec. 2004.
She is recuperating from the back surgery at her home in Spring texas and would be pleased to hear from Scrapper classmates.
The joke around the Russell household is that she had a husband and three sons who all played 4 years of high school football and 4 years of college ball and she has had twice as many knee surgeries as all of the sons and husband put together. Looks as though being a cheerleader is tougher on the knees than athletic participation. Ha!
Billy Gene Russell, also class of 1950, and Charlyne's husband of 55 years had a heart catheterization on Jan. 12, 2007. It was determined that he had no blockage at present. This test was a follow up of his heart attack and quardruple bypass in April 2002. After 5 years it appears that his cardiac system is working in an acceptable manner. Billy and Charlyne Russell live at 8003 Northbridge Drive, Spring Texas 77379 and their phone is (281) 376-0079.

In a phone call this p.m. from Bootsie, she advised Pete expects to go home from the hospital tomorrow, Jan. 13. He has been receiving antibiotics treatment for a bacterial infection, which had caused weakness and loss of weight since his surgery. He has had an upturn in gaining strength and increased appetite, so we hope he is back on the road to recovery. He and Bootsie express thanks for all the calls, prayers and concern from all the wonderful Scrapper bunch.

Update on Barbara Branch Simerson, class of 51!

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 15:43, on Tuesday, January 9, 2007

I finally found Barbara. I have been calling her since before Christmas, and have not gotten her or her daughter until today, Tuesday, January 9th. She is in Primacy Rehab which is part of St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. After getting out of the hospital after 46 days, Barbara was very weak, so she was admitted to the Rehab and has been there since. They have told her she will probably be there a couple more weeks. She is stronger and better now. Her phone number is (901) 818-5958. Barbara informs me that she goes to eat in a wheel chair with James Russell Collins, South Side class of 39, who lives in Memphis. Small world.

Update on Pete Sanders, class of 54!

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 15:10, on Sunday, January 7, 2007

This is an update on Pete Sanders, class of 54, from Marilee McElmurry Robertson, class of 53!!

Talked with Bootsie last night. Pete went to the hospital yesterday afternoon - Bootsie said nothing real serious - but the doctor said for him to come in. He has lost about 13 lbs since being home from just not being able to eat like he should (no appetite - nothing tastes right, etc) At the hospital they will give him fluids and nourishment to build him back up, run some tests to make sure everything from the surgery looks o.k. The doctor did not seem to think it was of great concern, that Pete was in good condition, his recovery from the surgery was good. Bootsie said they expect to go home probably Sunday.

Boostie told me they discovered at the hospital (before his surgery) from an MRI that Pete had broken four ribs from a recent fall. Pete knew he was hurt but decided to tough it out. The doctor couldn't believe Pete was able to stand the pain. He told the doctor afterward he thought he had maybe broken "one" rib. This was before his surgery and the doctor told him that maybe he was going to operate on Superman. To those of us who know Pete, that pretty much describes him.

Bootsie said feel free to call. The number at the hospital is 226-5210.

Agnes Heuberger Oakley, class of 51, had surgery.

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 19:30, on Saturday, January 6, 2007

I just spoke to Agnes Heuberger Oakley, of Jacksonville Florida, class of 1951. Agnes came home from the hospital Tuesday, January 2, 2007, after having her SECOND knee replacement. She spent about 17 days in the hospital and in therapy. She is doing well now, but from experience, I can tell you it is a tough surgery. The results can be very good after suffering a long time walking bone on bone, but it is slow going for awhile. Agnes, when you feel like running around the block, let me know and we will do it together.
