South Side on Prospect

Posted by Josephus at 9:17, on Wednesday, October 31, 2007

At the Piccadilly Dinner, on Oct. 23, I heard someone mention that South Side High on Prospect was no longer open. So, since then I have occasionally done a Web search for confirmation and this morning found a .pdf document that contained information concerning "certified staff" for Longview Middle, Hamilton High, and South Side High Schools. The gist of the document was this; South Side staff were being moved to Hamilton and Longview Middle staff were being moved to South Side. In other words, South Side will become a middle school and, from the document, I couldn't discern if South Side would retain the name or be changed to Longview Middle.

If anyone has any information on this, let me know by clicking HERE.

Site Updates Page & Other Things

Posted by Josephus at 10:36, on Monday, October 22, 2007

Site Updates
A few months back I disabled the "Site Updates" page because I just didn't have the time to make any entries. Now that has changed somewhat and hopefully I will be able to keep up with it. If you will check the page occasionally you might find something you had missed. You can even make "comments" on the updates I post. Just look in the menu to the left under "WEBMASTER".

Scrapper Alunmi Lapel PinsFREE Alumni Lapel Pins
I have this in the box above but thought I would repeat it here also. I will be at the Piccadilly Dinner Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, to distribute FREE Alumni Lapel Pins, a gift from the Class of 1953. Hopefully I will get there early enough to obtain a table near Terry's. Look for the sign, FREE LAPEL PINS.

News - Stories - Information
As you can see, I have changed the title of this feature to News - Stories - Information in an attempt to get the news administrators to use this space for it's original intention .... to post articles of interest .... not just obituaries. The obituaries are very much of interest to all of us, but so are other things that are going on in the lives of Scrapper Alumni. For instance, Kathaline Harbison '47 faithfully posts stories about her Class functions.

Some Classes still don't have news administrators. I would very much appreciate someone to volunteer from those Classes to post news for them. You can find out which Classes don't have admins by clicking on "To contact your Class News Administrator: click HERE" above.

Class Bulletins
Back in June I created a Bulletin Board for each Class to post ANYTHING they would like to post to their board. So far only Buck Pitt '62 and Sonny Cross '53 have taken advantage of this feature. Anyone can post to these boards without a password. Look at "Class Bulletins" in the menu above, run your cursor over it and select your Class .... when you get to the board look for "To post a message click here".

Do You Remember
The "Do You Remember" page is one of my favorites, but somehow it gets overlooked by most folks. I'm sure each of you has some memory of South Memphis you would like to share with us. To find the page click on "Scrapper Stuff/Memories/Do You Remember".

See you at the Piccadilly - Josephus

Death of a classmates husband.

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 19:11, on Friday, October 19, 2007

A message from Terry Williamson---

When I was eleven years old, I went to work at Ballin Drug Store at Latham and Trigg Street which is near A.B.Hill Elementary School delivering medicine and general purchases on a bicycle. At that time James Pinner was working behind the counter selling milk shakes etc. James later married Mary Rose Talarico who was in the South Side Class of 1947. Mary Rose died in 1997. Everyone in that end of town knew the Talarico family, who lived on Richmond Street just east of Latham. I saw in the Commercial Appeal the death notice of James Pinner and it brought back a lot of memories. Maybe you knew him or the Talarico family and it may also bring back memories to you. James was 79 years of age and lived with his daughter in Bartlett TN. I do not believe that James went to South Side.

It Was Bound To Happen Sooner or Later!

Posted by Josephus at 13:53, on Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Well, this morning I had a problem with one of my sites, "t-angelart". It was hacked by a supposed Palestinian calling himself Jnin "The Rocket" and belonging to an organization called al-Quassam. He was real proud of himself and didn't bother to cover his tracks. It was all there to see .... even an image that scrolled the entire page (Probably containing a virus of some sort. I'll be checking that later.)

So far, on the "t-angelart" site, he has destroyed the guestbook, the news feature, and the Art Gallery. This represents about two weeks work to get everything replaced and, hopefully, secured.

The reason I mention all of this is because it could happen to the Scrapper Alumni Site! If you see something disappear, please let me know! It is very difficult to check hundreds of pages, Web applications, and Web sites, not to mention what is involved getting everything replaced. Over the next few days I will be downloading backups for all of the databases that display information to our site; such as, the Registry and our News.

Let's hope he doesn't get around to us any time soon! If he does I might just throw up my hands and call it quits. Just kidding!
