Nancy "Sharp" Roberts '58....

Posted by LewisDalton59 at 15:53, on Wednesday, November 28, 2007

This is an e-mail I received from Jack Roberts '59 in reference to his wife Nancy's knee replacement.

Yesterday, seventy-eight days post-op from her knee replacement surgery, Nancy had a follow-up appointment with her orthopaedic surgeon. This morning, at his direction, she will be calling Campbell Clinic and canceling all of her scheduled rehab appointments!

The doctor said she has done extremely well and will have a fully functional right knee. It has been quite an ordeal for her, but she has been very diligent with her rehab and home exercises. Those will continue for the next few months. The doctor said the pain she still has is normal and should diminish over the next six to nine months. He has cleared her to resume normal activities and she can do pretty much anything she feels like doing within reasonable limits. On the way home, I suggested she not try any back flips for a while!

Once again we are blessed! Thanks to all for your prayers and support. We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

Jack

NEW PICTURE GALLERY...

Posted by LewisDalton59 at 15:26, on Saturday, November 17, 2007

I would like to bring your attention to the new picture gallery that Joe Tully recently introduced to the website. It's in the upper right-hand corner of this page under GALLERIES......titled "Alumni Today".

It starts off with the vacation pictures of Henry ('58) & Shirley Alexander and Roy ('58) & Yvonne Prince.

Being the cynical old man that I am, I said to myself, "who wants to see someone's trip to China with pictures of them taken in front of a lot of buildings etc. and blocking the view at that".

Well.....I took the time this morning to look at the beginning of the album and before I knew it, I was hooked.

There are 250 photos that you would swear were taken by a photographer from the National Geographic magazine. They are so good that it makes the occasional picture of Henry and Roy bearable. *grin*. I wished that Henry had been right here, telling me all about the different scenes.

Go take a look for yourself.....click on "Alumni Today" in the upper right corner, then click on slide show....sit back and enjoy.

I'm sure Joe will be elaborating more on this new album, with directions on what type of photos he is looking for and how to get them to him.

Go look now....you want be bored.

A Classmates wife had surgery--class of 43

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 11:01, on Saturday, November 17, 2007

Chuck Cromwell, class of 43 writes-----

My wife Ruth, has been in Covenant hospital since Monday, Nov. 12. On Tuesday morning her surgeon removed about 16 inches of her right transverse colon in order to remove a small cancer they had discovered a month earlier. Tonight, Friday 5 p.m., she ate her first meal of the week. From Tuesday thru Thursday, she was not allowed to even have a drink of water! Her attitude really improved with fish for supper tonight. Our oldest daughter, Judy, is in town from Atlanta. She gets the night shift tonight. Susan and Cindy have been trading off nights. Now, we hope for Ruth to come home Sunday evening. Things are really looking up for us tonight.

Dwelling On Humility

Posted by Josephus at 9:46, on Saturday, November 17, 2007

It is a wonderful thing when someone does something for unselfish reasons. Someone who steps into the gap because of concern for his fellow man. Someone who knows no other way. Someone who can't be associated with aggrandizement, which to him, is like the difference of the distance of east from west.

I know such a man. I have known him since I was six years old and can vouch for his integrity. He will take office on the Memphis City Council beginning January 1st.

Most of us don't live in Memphis any longer, but our roots are there and some of us were retired from Memphis Civil Service and the control of our pensions still lies there.

Congratulations "Willie"! We are looking forward to your term in office and we know you will serve with distinction because your Christian heritage won't allow for anything less.

Remembering Our Veterans

Posted by Josephus at 10:28, on Monday, November 12, 2007

Yesterday afternoon and last night after church, I made it a point to watch the Military and History Channels as they presented tribute after tribute to our men and women who are serving, and have served, our country so that we might look forward, with confidence and peace of mind, to our tomorrows. From the most destructive war our country has ever known, the Civil War (500,000 plus dead), to the present, gallant and heroic men and women have stepped forward to preserve our freedom.

These people of our Armed Services are very dear to me, as I know they are to most of you. But, what I would like to do here is recognize those who have served in a way that is not generally known. Men, and possibly women, who have risked and given their lives in a service that will never be known. To you who have been involved in this sort of thing, "I salute you". You are my brothers, because I served with you. I know intimately what risks you took, because I was there. I know the frustration of no one understanding, because I am misunderstood. Thank you so much for what you did, knowing you would never be recognized .... and never could be recognized.

South Side on Prospect

Posted by Josephus at 9:37, on Sunday, November 11, 2007

South Side on Prospect "is no more"! The building is still there, but it now houses the South Side Health Career Academy and Longview Middle School. We are now officially, dinosaurs. Since 1923 our old alma mater has been a part of Memphis and has graduated some of America's most outstanding citizens. Memphis will never see the likes of us again.

Goodbye South Side, you were so good to us and we definitely appreciate all that you did for us and the memories you have given us.

Thanks to Geneva Russell '71.

DEATH OF A FELLOW SCRAPPER & HER HUSBAND

Posted by JanHolleyLong57 at 11:57, on Sunday, November 4, 2007

It is with a sad heart and yet, a rejoicing heart, that I report to you that Gary W. and Harriet Schultz Chandler (Class of 1957) went home to be with their Lord & Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, November 1, 2007. Our Webmaster has already written about them, but I just wanted to share a few things many of you may or may not know. Harriet had a beautiful soprano voice. Several years after we graduated from SSHS, Harriet began taking voice lessons, something she had wanted to do for a long time. Her voice teacher did wonders with her talent and Harriet began singing in church choirs and making personal appearances in churches and gatherings across the city of Memphis. When she met Gary, he encouraged her to continue with her studies. Over the years the extreme pain in her back prevented her from singing in the choir, she just couldn't do the climb anymore. Today, she is singing in God's heavenly choir and Gary is cheering her on.

Sometimes God may seem far away . . . unconcerned and unaware of the events in our lives, but every second we are the object of His loving concern. With our name written in His hands, He cannot and will not forget us.

To their two sons, Gary, Jr. and Stephen, I would like to leave these words of Ron Lessin. "From His heart of love God sent his son - to pay a debt, to give a gift, to defeat an enemy, to make a way to mend a heart, to redeem a life, to prepare a bride." All that He had done for you is just the beginning of all that He will do for you, of all the blessings that He will bring to you and of all that He will be to you.

Romans 8:32 "Since He did not spare even His own Son for us but gave Him up for us all, won't He also surely give us everything else?"
