DOT "MONGER" DALTON '59.....

Posted by LewisDalton59 at 17:18, on Friday, May 25, 2007

I was a little reluctant to post something on Dot, for fear of telling you more than you wanted to know….but here goes.

On Friday March 16th, Dot entered Germantown Methodist Hospital to have a tumor removed from one of her ovaries. The doctor described it as 9-10 inches in diameter. Of course our worst fear was that it might be malignant. After the surgery, the doctor told us we would have to wait on the pathology report for at least 3-5 days.

Sometime during the morning of Saturday, March 17th, Dot had a stroke that left her totally disabled on her left side. She had what the doctor described as “left neglect”….she didn’t even recognize her own left hand.

During her stay, she had a blood infection that set her back another week. She was really frail and weak, from not eating in the hospital, when she was discharged and sent to Health South to begin her rehab.

After spending a month at Health South I now have her at home. She is still getting outpatient therapy 3 times a week, 2 hours per day, at Health South.

She is showing signs of movement in her leg and arm. Hopefully, she is on the road to a full recovery. Only time will tell.

I can’t begin to tell you how much she appreciated all the Scrappers that came to the hospital and Health South to visit her….John and Ann Barger, Jack and Nancy Roberts, Vicki “McIntosh” Tullis and Alan, Delores “Gregory” Johnson and Charles, Sally “Wamble” McIntosh and Neal Poag..to name a few. She had 50 visitors at Germantown Methodist. I haven’t kept count at Health South.

I don’t know what either of us would have done if it hadn’t been for Tommy and Pearl Carlisle. We were already close…not just close neighbors but close friends. Now Tommy and Pearl seem like part of our family. Pearl has been there since day one, to sit with Dot so I could go home or just get out for a while. I have some property in south Memphis that I’m trying to sell and Tommy went down and cleaned up the yard and cut the grass for me. When we found out insurance wouldn't pay for some of the equipment we needed at home for Dot, Tommy was quick to pay for one of the items to help ease the burden. They don't get any better than the Carlisles.

To the people who have sent her cards and called about her, let me say thank you…a million times, thank you. She has kept every card and I have to write down the name of everyone who has called so that one day she hopes to thank each of you herself.

Keep those prayers and cards coming…..

Dot “Monger” Dalton
6256 Skylight Dr.
Bartlett, TN 38135

As far as I’m concerned, don’t anyone worry about me….I’m doing what I want to do….taking care of Dot.

Oh yeah…in case you were wondering….the tumor was benign.

Dot "Monger" Dalton

Posted by Josephus at 9:01, on Saturday, May 19, 2007

Yesterday I talked (email) to Lewis and he brought me up to date on Dot, or more correctly, Dot and HIMSELF. Right now it is a struggle for both of them. Dot still has no feeling on her left side from her stroke in March, although she does have some movement and is making very slow, but steady, progress. Anyone who has been through something like this knows that the main problem is the time involved to recover. Struggling for weeks and months, seemingly without end, just to get through the most mundane daily routines.

Please remember Dot in your prayers, but also remember Lewis. Lewis is the "caretaker" and all of this is weighing heavily on both of them.

Update of Jack Hogan, class of 51!

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 10:15, on Thursday, May 10, 2007

I went by to see Jack Hogan, class of 51, yesterday at the Atrium ReHab Center at 303 Walnut Grove, Memphis TN 38111. The Atrium is on Walnut Grove directly behind the Main Branch of the Memphis Public Library and just down the street from the back side of East High School. Jack has been in three hospitals (or ReHab) since January 9th., which makes 4 months. He still suffers from lack of oxygen which makes it hard for him to talk above all the noise his oxygen equipment makes. It is disheartning to see him lying there without being able to get up and move around, and I can tell you he sure enjoys seeing someone he knows. It is hard for me to imagine him getting up and going home, in the near future. Would you like to help Jack feel better?? If you do, send him a card. One time when I went by to see him, he had received 4 cards and he was so happy. His address is listed above and his room number is 109. Please--keep Jack in your thoughts and prayers.

Husband of Janett Northam Ogg (Class of '53)

Posted by MarileeRobertson53 at 8:26, on Wednesday, May 9, 2007

I rec'd the following in an e-mail from a Scrapper who asked that I post the news to the website:

"I don't know if you have heard or not - but just 2 or 3 weeks ago in Hawaii, Janett Northam Ogg (Class of '53) and her husband were attending the Assemblies of God District Council when her husband, Jerald, had a massive coronary during the service and was rushed to the hospital, whereupon they found he had a blood clot on the brain, and 3 days later it caused a stroke.

I'm sure she would love for her Scrapper friends to be praying for him. An e-mail to me indicates he has taken a turn for the worse. (Janett, JoAnne Prescott Hiller and I have been friends for many years and attended the same church in Memphis as teenagers.) We need as many prayers going up for Jerald as possible, so please ask everyone to pray for him. Also pray for Janett as she is very tired and it is very hard on her trying to help care for Jerald.

Janett and Jerald had recently resigned their church in Hawaii and their son was voted in as Postor. Janett and Jerald were going to stay on and help with the transition and then move back to TN in August or September. When this happened to Jerald, all their children flew to be by his side. Thank you so much for your prayers.
Margaret (Margie) Kearns Van Vleck, Class of 1954
(I didn't get to graduate from South Side as I had too move to Florida for my mother's health, so I graduated in Jacksonville, FL. I am also a minister's wife.)"

Please put Janett and Jerald on your prayer list and keep the family in your thoughts and prayers. M.

Update on David White, class of 51.

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 21:46, on Friday, May 4, 2007

An email from Glenn Moore, class of 51, says that David's heart cath came out pretty good. The doctor told us that he did not have to put in a stint at this time...told him to stop smoking NOW...to start taking a baby aspirin NOW... and to get his cholesterol levels way down...the doctor is doubling his daily Lipitor dosage. This little episode David had could have been a "blessing in disguise.

Death of a class of 1942 classmate---Mary Jeannett Wilson Dunlap

Posted by TerryWilliamson51 at 21:38, on Friday, May 4, 2007

Mary Jeannett Wilson Dunlap was born 1924 in Memphis TN. She graduated from South Side in 1942 and that same year attended the Memphis Academy of Arts. Shortly thereafter, she felt called to an accelerated program of nurses training for World War II duties. She did private duty nursing for a short while before she joined the Veterans Administration and worked at the Veterans Hospital for more than 20 years as a floor nurse and supervisor. In April 1962, she married James Bronson Dlunlap and resigned her position with the hospital. The two were happily married until Jim's death on November 8, 1981. She then gave up her home and moved to Wesley Highland Towers where she did extensive volunteer work for the residents. It was during these years that she took up her art work again doing more that two dozen oil paintings. She went to Quince Nursing Home and died there on May 1st. She leaves her brother, Dr. Thomas R. Wilson Jr. and his wife, Mary Louise of Collierville. The family requests that any memorial be sent to the Piperton United Methodist Church.
