NEW YEARS DAY!!``xTerryWilliamson51``x
NEW YEARS DAY!

Twas the day after New Years, and all through the house,
they were still sleeping, both husband and spouse.
They partied last night with dancing and drink,
heads a hurting so bad they can’t think.
Scotch and water, his favorite at the bar,
over a dozen he had downed so far.
He danced with the girls and joked with the men,
and headed right straight back to the bar again.
“Give me a double”, to the host he yelled,
turned around twice and over the chair he fell.
With giggles and laughter he lay on the floor,
then got up and headed back for more.
She did no better, she drank like a sot.
She’ll surely regret the head she has got.
They’ll never learn, they’ll do it again I fear.
It’s just the thing to do on every New Year.

One of Terry’s rhymes.

The words of George and Ira Gershwin's 1930's song seems to fit my situation very nicely, thank you! And yes, it is "I Got Rhythm" and not "I've Got Rhythm". Because of this rhythm I slept for almost 10 hours last night. It was wonderful! The first good night's rest in almost a year.

Now you are wondering what is all this about rhythm? Quite simply, my heart has been out of rhythm and has been causing most, if not all, of my recent problems. My cardiologist has finally been able to control it enough, with medication, that we can now wait until I am infection free to insert a "pacemaker" .... some time between Christmas and the New Year.

Monday morning I started having chest pains so I called Mary and she drove me to the emergency room at NEA Baptist in Jonesboro. The chest pains were not a heart attack as we first thought, but pains caused by my severe heart rhythm. A shot of morphine took care of the pain temporarily and an extra dose of 200mgs of amiodarone took care of the rhythm. Wallah, "Feelin' good Billy Ray!" There was just one catch .... I had to stay in the hospital until we were sure that the problem had been solved. But this worked out OK because by the time all of the before mentioned had been worked out there was an ice storm and we couldn't have left Jonesboro until Wednesday anyway.

There was one other beneficial side effect of our stay in the hospital, .... "Mary was forced to rest for almost 3 days"! I had been talking to the Lord for some time about Mary being so exhausted and how much she needed rest. Well, He worked it out perfectly .... Mary got rest and "I Got Rhythm". Isn't our Lord wonderful?

I would like to thank Lewis Dalton '59 for taking care of posting my many "soap opera like events". He has been faithful in helping with the site since it's inception. Thanks Lewis and may you and Dot have a wonderful Christmas.

***********************************************************
Farewell America--We'll really miss you!

Farewell to the America we have loved for two centuries and hello to a new far-left driven president who promised change and will most likely deliver on it,

Farewell, to an America driven by individuals with strong work ethics to one which will resemble French, German, and British societies where big government, big welfare, union controlled labor, four day work weeks, ten week vacations are the rule. Societies which constantly ask "---where's mine?"

Farewell to capitalism, job creation, lower taxes, smaller government, fewer entitlements, safer cities, personal responsibility and sound work ethics.

Farewell to adequate military defense spending to protect us from our enemies who wish and plan to kill us.

Farewell to close ties with our best and only friend in the middle east---Israel.

Farewell to maintaining a conservative Supreme Court.

Farewell to any chance of keeping HealthCare out of the hands and control of government.

Farewell to the famous American standard of living--a magnet to the world.

Farewell to conservative 'talk radio' as an antidote to the biased media. The Fairness Doctrine will return.

Farewell to any hope for educating our college kids in something other than liberal mush.

Today is truly a sad day for millions of Americans as they slowly allow the election results to sink in. Today, for the first time in modern history, America took a giant step toward changing not only the direction, but the entire character of the country from free enterprise driven to big government driven.

Our only hope is to start now planning and building a strong conservative base which can reclaim the Presidency and Congress in four years and start repairing the damage. God help us if we fail. Lou Pritchett; 152 Plantation Circle South, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, 32082; (904) 285-1528

The "Scrapper Phenomenon" is truly a wonder to see and hard to believe by outsiders. Thanks to Terry and Margie Williamson for making it possible for us to gather to exercise our care for one another.

If you weren't able to come you really missed a treat. "The Boomers" outdid themselves and their performance was enjoyed by one and all. I actually shut my mouth long enough to listen to a couple of songs and I rarely allow anything to interfere with my gab.

There are a couple of Scrappers that are always very faithful in there attendance and if they aren't present there has to be something very important that hinders them. One of these people is Robert McCaskill '53. When I inquired about him someone told me he had injured his neck in an mishap in his front yard. Keep Robert in your prayers, he is a very special Scrapper. But aren't we all .... even Sonny Cross!

It's amazing what you can find out about all of these Scrappers that you grew up with if you just take the time to engage some of them in conversation. For instance, when I first arrived I didn't think anyone would be there, we were very early, but low and behold there sat "Sonny" Harrison and his wife. So when Sonny had finished stuffing his face we got into a conversation that somehow involved his mother and he mentioned she was Irish and her maiden name was O'Daniel. So I says, "By any chance is she kin to Woody, Kenny, and Frankie O'Daniel", and Sonny says, "They are my uncles"! I knew all of these folks the majority of my life and never knew they were kin.

"Because He Lives" we can face tomorrow. Pete SandersAs a youngster we are not always aware of the ways we are treated by our older peers. If someone is a bully, never friendly, or mean, we remember and recognize them immediately. We try to stay away from these individuals. When we grow up and become older and wiser, we reflect back to times and memories of the past. Some of my greatest memories growing up are of times spent with Pete. At A B Hill School, Pete, being a few years older, would put a knuckle scrub on my head, all the while grinning and calling me by my name. Other memories are from Parkway Methodist Church, Sanders Drug Store, and South Side Park. Pete would always take time for me and all my friends. As a park director Pete looked after, and worked with all of us, improving our skills and abilities. When I reached SSHS Pete was a senior. He took me and many others and tried to lead us on the proper path.

After high school and every ones exodus from South Memphis, I did not see Pete for several years. When I ran into Pete at a function, years later, we had a good visit. As we were leaving this event, Pete and I hugged each other, I told him I loved him, and thanked him for always being my friend. Pete said, I love you Joe, and lets keep each other in our prayers.

It would be an injustice if I didn't tell of the many evenings spent at South Side Park. Some of us would make arrangements to secure a couple of cold watermelons, John Sanders, Babe & Floyd Massey, James Echols, and some guy named Cooper. Pete and Bosco would be waiting when we showed up with the melons. Pete could remember and tell jokes for hours as we enjoyed the melons and this time together. In conclusion I would like to thank you, Pete Sanders, for who you were, a friend, a son of God, and a Brother In Christ.

I looked through the news archives and didn't see David Lewis Garner's name mentioned, so I thought I would send this to you. Maybe some of the older Scrappers remember him. I was just doing a Google search for Southside, and his name came up.

DAVID LEWIS GARNER Published: January-10-2008

David Lewis Garner was the type of person who could put a smile on any frowning face, according to his wife, Dorothy Garner.

"He was always so cheerful and witty and had a great sense of humor," she said, "He could make you laugh when you wanted to cry."

David died April 4. He was 75. He is buried in WTN Veterans Cemetery.

David was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Memphis, Tenn., where he married Dorothy 20 years later on July 19, 1949, at Bellevue Baptist Church.

Dorothy said she met David just before her 16th birthday in 1947 at a bus stop in Memphis.

"I remember meeting him like it was yesterday," she said. "It was on a Friday night when my sister and I and one of my good friends went to a movie at the then Capitol Theater on McLemore Road.

"I remember these two boys, one of them which was David, followed us into the movies and sat behind us and heckled us during the entire movie. After the movie, the boys followed us to the bus stop and we all talked with each other until the bus arrived.

"I ended up giving David my phone number that night, and he called me the very next day, the same day my family was having a picnic. While I was on the phone with him, my cousin grabbed the phone from me and invited him to join us for the picnic and he did.

"From that day on he called me every day and would come to visit me often. And every time he came to see me he would bring me a pack of double mint chewing gum as a gift."

That same year, David graduated from Southside High School and a year later in 1948 became a member of the U.S. Airforce for two years, during which he became a private 1st class.

Dorothy said she and David kept in touch through letters and would see each other during his occasional visits home.

"We would see each other during his weekend furlows," she said, "We got married during one of those furlows. He was wearing his uniform the day we got married."

David returned home to stay a few months later in the winter of 1949, Dorothy said.

David, whose nickname was "Red" because of his bright red hair, worked for many years in the printing business in Memphis. He was a pressman at Wimmer Brothers Printing, a pressman and printing estimator-salesman at Standard Printing Co., and an estimator at Holiday Press. David retired as an estimator from Austin Hennon Bindary about 12 years ago.

The couple later gave birth to their only daughter, Debra Garner, whom David chose as his favorite fishing partner.

"My dad had a fishing boat, and we used to go to Pickwick Lake a lot when I was younger and fish all day sometimes," she said, "And we
continued to fish together up until about five years ago."

Debra said Pickwick is the place where her father taught her how to swim.

"I remember he pushed me off the fishing dock and I swam, she said, "We had some good times on the lake."

Debra said, aside from fishing, her father enjoyed doing yardwork and working on cars, and he especially loved traveling.

"He really liked to travel out west," she said. "He traveled up until about two years ago. He was just an outgoing and energetic man for his age."

Debra said David was also a people person.

"He loved family get togethers and being with friends," she said. "And he also just loved to help people."

In 1991, the Garners moved to Olive Branch, where David and Dorothy became members of Mineral Wells Methodist Church.

Debra said her father was "one of a kind."``xEkkEVZZklFDGrbqGgD``x1221577283``xClass_of_1947 Morris Brook, class of 55 passed away.``xTerryWilliamson51``xPosted by Henry Alexander '58

Just want you to know I didn't have surgery on aneursym this week.
The vascular surgeon said it was adjoining the renal artery to the
kidney
and could cause the kidney not to function.
He said have a CT-Scan in about 5 or 6 mos. to check the size of the
aneursym and if it's larger I will need dialysis and then surgery.
Dialysis will keep kidney working.
Will keep you advised.

"TOGETHER AGAIN!!"

He left us today, John Rider was his name.
It was our world’s loss, and Heaven’s gain.
His pain is now gone, he suffers no more.
Everything changed when he entered the Door.
God met him there, he said, “Come with me.”
“You’ll like it here, just you wait and see.”
Then he heard a voice say, “John, it’s me”.
He turned to look and who did he see?
It was his Mother, on her face was a smile.
“John, I’ve been waiting for a long, long while.”
Then they joined hands and walked into the night.
Everything was better, he was now all right.
They’re together again, till the sun turns to dust,
and they’ll be standing at the gate waiting for us.
God bless you John, we love you!!!

His son tells me that a therapist was walking Terrell around the room and he was standing up better than he had in a very long time.

We owe much to these brave people who laid, and are laying, their lives down for us that we might be free. I would be remiss not to post my feelings, and hopefully yours, about these extraordinary people.

No matter what a lot of Americans may think, the cost of freedom has a very expensive price tag attached. That price is our youngest and bravest. Throughout our history these young men and women have stepped forward to fill the gap when our country and our way of life is threatened. I, for one, am very grateful and proud to recognize such wonderful people.

The photo was taken by Life magazine photographer, Robert Capa, on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. The men in the photo were of the 16th Regiment of the Big Red 1, the famous Army Division that fought in every campaign from North Africa until the war ended in Germany in 1945.

Mr Williamson,
I met you at the Piccadilly's on Mt Moriah about two years ago. You were with your classmates for a monthly meeting. I am interested in securing photos/pictures of the old Southside School which became Lincoln Junior High. My first teaching assignment was at Lincoln Junior High. I would like to compile memorabilia of that time period. Please reply if you can help me with this project.

I am Claudine Stansbury 901 754 2380

I hope you and classmates are still meeting.

Thank you,
Claudine Stansbury

Lou received it from Bill's wife Connie Burk.

Terry, Here is the latest on Bill Burk from his wife, Connie. Lou Pritchett

Hi Lou:
Got your phone message -- I am in and out, visiting with Bill at Baptist Restorative Care Hospital and working as best I can at UT, too, so not home a lot these days...
Bill just got out of the ICU on April 8 -- he's been there since March 16! He had a VATS surgical procedure for pleural effusion around the right lung on March 13, then started to have low blood sugar while in the step-down unit in the hospital on March 16, and they moved him back to ICU. On March 17, they discovered he was not getting rid of enough carbon dioxide, so he was intubated and put on a ventilator. Then he went into complete kidney failure, and eventually they started dialysis, which he is still getting 3 times a week. He got a tracheotomy on March 27, so now he is being weaned off the ventilator and physical and occupational therapy are working with him on getting out of bed for starters after just lying in bed, unable to move himself for weeks. So, he has been through a LOT, after expecting to be in the hospital 3 days following surgery....
And he still can't talk with the trach, since he has too many secretions to get a speech valve yet. Also, he got a multi-resistant bacterial infection while in ICU that he is still fighting off...
Apart from this, now that he is in Restorative Care, all is looking up, and Bill feels better about it. He is also motivated to get active again and is excited to see the therapists walk in the door, so that's really great.
We have take it one step at a time now, and let it take as long as it takes for Bill to get well. Baptist does have wireless computer access, so I hope that some day soon he may be strong enough to be able to send e-mails to a few people...
In the meantime, you can reach him at this address:

``xEkplElyFyAPSAPPzPn``x1208186369``xClass_of_1949 PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE!!!``xTerryWilliamson51``xAlmost everyone who is a Scrapper knows what Joe Tully has done for us. Joe, who was in the class of 53, started and is maintaining our beautiful SCRAPPER WEB SITE. I know that everyone who went to South Side does not have a computer and they may not have every seen our web site, but, those or us who look at it really loves it. I do not want Joe to spend HIS money to maintain the site, and he has been doing just that. From what I can pull out of Joe, I think he is spending between $700 and $1,000 per year on the site. What I am asking in this message is for US to send Joe a contribution to take care of that amount. NOW---I do not ask you to send Joe a LARGE amount of money. NO---I ask you to send him an amount that is reasonable. IF, a group of people sends him SOME money, it will be enough to replace what he spends. If you would like to help in this project, send Joe Tully a check (Payable to Joe Tully) at 4904 West County Road 796, Lepanto Arkansas, 72354 and mark it for the Scrapper Web Site. Just to update you -- Bill has now been moved out of ICU and down to Baptist's Restorative Care Hospital, where the goal is to get him off the ventilator he has been on since March 17 and also to get some physical therapy and get active again.

He still can't speak due to a tracheotomy and the ventilator, but that will hopefully be remedied soon. I know he has a lot he wants to say! ;-)

His address there for the next few weeks is:

She handed me the paper and said 'isn't that Robert McCaskill? I looked at the picture and said, 'Well, that guy is ugly enough'. I got my phone and called Robert and asked him if he went to Spook Murphy's funeral and he said yes. Perhaps I should just say that "I'm home". Very, very tired .... but home! From the looks of things, it will more than likely be a long, long recuperative process. (I still have to undergo another heart catheter reparation process. Not open-heart but catheter .... there is a huge difference.)

What happened to Josephus? It's pretty simple really .... back before Christmas I had pneumonia and didn't completely recover before returning to normal activities. The result!! Congestive heart failure!! There were a heck of a lot of things that went on in my life from the pneumonia incident to congestive heart failure, but there's no point of elaborating on them. I just want to give you one bit of advice, "When your doctor releases you and tells you to take it easy .... Damn-it!! Take it Easy!!" Please forgive my language, but you are my beloved Scrappers and I don't want to lose any more of you because of your pride, hard-headed attitude, or just plain old stupidity. It's OK to relax folks! No one will fault you, and if they do, give me a call and I'll send someone by their home on a dark, rainy night to give them an "attitude adjustment".

As I said at the beginning, I'm pretty tired and will have to elaborate on this more in the future, but let me finish for now by telling you about something that occurred when I was in "ICU". On the third day of my stay in this most necessary of rooms, I'm lying there with pulsating tubes crammed into every orifice of my body, and I see what I think is a familiar face float by the door. Now this can't be .... this familiar face lives a long way from Jonesboro, Ar. But it was him! It was Joe Bickerstaff. He and his wife, Gloria Nelson, had come to visit and folks, they stuck around long enough for old Josephus to be taken to a room and we had a nice long visit. The next day Roy Hubbard and his wife came over for a visit.

I have so, so many of you to thank for your prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits. It is a wonderful thing to be appreciated, but let me tell you something folks, "it's much better to be loved"! And that is exactly what I have received from so many of my beloved Scrappers!
